It’s the start of a new year, which means many of us are thinking about resolutions. For many people, those resolutions will include cutting calories and exercising more. While those are good goals to have, we believe we might have an even better way to ensure your path to a more fulfilling life - resolve to improve your knowledge of craft beer and enhance your palette for better beer in the process! With that in mind, the Finger Lakes Beer Trail proposes the following five Craft Beer Resolutions for 2015.
1. Visit more local breweries
For craft beer fans, there’s nothing like visiting your favorite local brewery – and with over 75 craft breweries along the Finger Lakes Beer Trail, we have lots of options to choose from! Not only does this support your local economy and the art of craft beer making, but it is also a great way to enjoy creative and innovative new recipes and techniques, learn how beer is made, and meet the folks who put their heart and soul into every beer they brew.
2. Try something different
New Year means new beer. Break from your typical routine, stray from your comfort zone, and try a beer you wouldn't ordinarily order. If you tend toward IPAs, try some sweeter, maltier dark beers. If you prefer extreme beers, try ordering a session beer. If you’ve never tasted a sour or barrel-aged beer, now is the time to expand your horizons. Who knows, 2015 may be the year you discover your new favorite beer style!
3. Go to a beer festival
The best way to expand your tastes is at a beer festival. Go to one you’ve never been to before. Make a trip out of it. And, be sure to mark your calendars for the 2nd Annual Finger Lakes Beer Festival at Watkins Glen International, tentatively scheduled for October 24, 2015.
4. Learn more about pairing beer with food
Craft beer has emerged as a wonderful counterpart to food, and frankly you are missing out if you don’t explore the pleasures of pairings. There are many possibilities to explore when it comes to pairing beer with food - from cheese to spicy foods to chocolate – and everything in between. Many brewpubs feature imaginative beer and food pairing events and programs. Check our events calendar for pairing dinners near you!
5. Advocate for craft beer
You probably have friends or family who still drink mass-produced beer without much flavor. They know not what they do! It’s up to you to spread the gospel of craft beer to those who have not yet come to the light. Ask them what flavors they like and suggest a beer that matches. Bring over a six-pack of something they would never buy for themselves. Buy a round, and make it a craft beer. Talk up your favorite local breweries and craft beers. Remember, friends don’t let friends drink bad beer!
